¡Bajo Aguan Resiste!

Poor campesinos in the Aguan region, in need of a means of survival, are reclaiming lands that have been illegally and violently taken from them by wealthy land-owners backed by the regime.

Chixoy Dam

Thousands of impoverished Mayan-Achi campesinos were illegally and forcibly evicted from their villages along the Chixoy river to make way for the construction of a hydro-electric dam.

Violence in Guatemala doesn't occur in a vacuum. This massacre was not an incomprehensible act of violence, but a logical and predictable consequence of Guatemalan political, economic and military policies.

Once again, Guatemala's reputation on the world stage has been stained by an abject crime. This time it was Facundo Cabral who fell victim to our long and tragic saga of domestic crime. Cabral, a famous Argentinean citizen of the world - "I am not from here, neither am I from there", "I have no age, no future" - had been a faithful friend during our uprisings in the seventies.
