Poor campesinos in the Aguan region, in need of a means of survival, are reclaiming lands that have been illegally and violently taken from them by wealthy land-owners backed by the regime.

Chixoy Dam

Thousands of impoverished Mayan-Achi campesinos were illegally and forcibly evicted from their villages along the Chixoy river to make way for the construction of a hydro-electric dam.

Violence in Guatemala doesn't occur in a vacuum. This massacre was not an incomprehensible act of violence, but a logical and predictable consequence of Guatemalan political, economic and military policies.

In the late 1990s, early 2000s, global (mainly Canadian) mining companies received mining concessions from Guatemalan governments when the most powerful politician in Guatemala was former General Rios Montt, now on house arrest for being one of the intellectual authors of Guatemala's genocide and State repression against its own population in the 1970s, 80s and early 90s.
