Rights Action (www.rightsaction.org) has worked with and supported indigenous and campesino organizations in Guatemala since the 1980s, and in Honduras since 1998.
RESISTANCE TO HARMFUL MINING
Since 2000, Rights Action has been supporting and involved with struggles related to Goldcorp Inc’s open-pit, cyanide-bonding mines in Honduras and Guatemala, and related to HudBay Mineral’s nickel mine (formerly owned by INCO and then Skye Resources) in Guatemala.  At www.rightsaction.org, there is a lot of information about the environmental and health harms, and the human and indigenous rights violations caused by these (and other) mining companies.
GOLDCORP’s ANNUAL SHAREHOLDER MEETING, TORONTO, MAY 19:  Our speakers – particularly Karen Spring in Ontario and Quebec (Montreal area), in May – will focus particular attention on Goldcorp Inc’s mines in Honduras and Guatemala, as build up to its annual shareholder meeting in Toronto, May 19th.
OPPOSITION TO HONDURAS’ REPRESSIVE REGIME
Building on 11 years of work in Honduras, Rights Action is working with and supporting the courageous people’s movement in Honduras.  On June 28, 2009, the Honduran military, in collusion with economic and political elites, the Catholic Church and media, overthrew the democratic government of President Zelaya.  Since that date, a massive movement of the Honduran people has come together to re-found their State and society and build a real democracy.
SPEAKERS
Since 1995, Annie Bird & Grahame Russell have been co-directors of Rights Action.  Karen Spring has worked with Rights Action (in Honduras & Guatemala) since early 2009.
WHERE:  Karen Spring will tour Ontario and the Montreal area of Quebec in May.  Annie & Grahame are available for public speaking in throughout March, April, May.
NORTH-SOUTH ACCOUNTABILITY
In all our work, Rights Action focuses attention on the policies and actions of Canadian and United States governments and investors that support and benefit from North American mining companies.  Likewise, the United States and Canadian governments indirectly supported the coup regime in Honduras, then endorsed the undemocratic elections of November 2009 and have formally recognized the new pro-coup government of President Lobo.
