(Cristian Cerrato is a child in El Porvenir, Siria Valley, Honduras. Since two months ago, he is suffering health problems. His parents have sought medical help; his problems go away, and then come back.)

March 2010
PHOTO-ESSAY: On-going, repetitive health harms in the Siria Valley, Honduras, near Goldcorp Inc’s open-pit, cyanide-leaching mine. All photos taken by Carlos Amador in March 2010.
Since 2003, Rights Action has supported and worked with the “Comité Ambientalista Valle de Siria” (Siria Valley Environmental Defense Committee) that works to denounce and try and remedy the environmental and health harms and human rights violations caused by Goldcorp Inc’s open-pit, cyanide leaching gold mine, and in promotion of community-controlled development, in defense of human rights and the environment.
All the people, photographed and interviewed below, live in or near the town of El Porvenir, which is the municipal ‘capital’ of the municipality of El Porvenir, department of Francisco Morazan – 1.5 hours north of Tegucigalpa.
The town of El Porvenir is 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the “Marlin Mine”, an open pit, cyanide leaching mine owned by Goldcorp Inc, operated by its subsidiary Entre Mares. Goldcorp’s ill-gotten mining concession also includes the municipality of El Porvenir, but due to community, national and international opposition, Goldcorp was unable to expand its gold mine from the municipality of San Ignacio.
All the families interviewed said their children had never had these skin problems before. All the people, below, have sought medical attention and been told by medical practitioners that the cause of their recurring skin rashes and hair loss is water contaminated by Goldcorp’s mine.

Jose Luis Flores (9 years old). His mother says that he suffers these health problems since 3 months ago.

Luis Ramón Rodríguez (3). His mother: “We thought these things only happened to people who live near the mine. Now, look what is happening to us as well.”

Juan Jose Cabrera (6). His mother: “We have never seen this in my village. They say that this happens near the mine, but now look how it is affecting us. My soon scratches and scratches – it hurts him.”

Alexis Anain López (5). His mother: “Look how he is. You should seek how this hurts me, to see him like this, every night, scratching, scratching, until blood comes out – he can’t take it. I cry when I see him so desperate. We have never seen this before.”
.jpg)
Reina Jiménez (3).

Christopher Garay (6). His mother says that mefdicine does not help him: “My son scratches because it hurts him. Look how he is.”

Juan Manuel Soto (7). His father says he never thought he would see his son like this. “School mates make fun of him because he has bald spots in his hair. Look, how his hair is falling out and medicine does nothing for him.”

Wilfredo Velasquez (38). Affected all over his head – it hurts him.

Delfina Flores (72). This is hurting her. She scratches and scratches; she has tried for medicine.

TORONTO STOCK EXCHANGE / ONTARIO SECURITIES COMMISSION
“Attempting to meet with Ontario Securities Commission and Toronto Stock Exchange might be a dead end. The OSC and TSX take the view that their job is to regulate stock markets for benefit of investors. Thus their activities should be limited to providing protection to investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices and to fostering fair and efficient capital markets and confidence in capital markets.
“It may be a good idea to request these meetings anyway. Indeed, it is a major issue that the TSX and OSC don’t see themselves as part of the problem when they clearly are. Requesting the meetings might be a good way to put them on notice, and to draw their attention to an issue they don’t think about enough. And if the meetings were granted, it would be a good opportunity to point out the failures in their regulatory frameworks.
“As for who you should contact, neither the TSX nor the OSC has a branch or office to which a meeting request like this should be made (not surprising given the above).
If company is listed on TSX, each account is managed by one person. chart listing name of that person and their contact information: http://www.tmx.com/en/pdf/TSXLIS-IssuerManagerReport.pdf
