Day 72 - Honduras Coup Resistance
Photo-essay by Grahame Russell (Rights Action)
Again, 1000s of pro-democracy, anti-coup Hondurans took to the streets of Tegucigalpa.  Receiving little coverage in the main-stream North American media, this is a most extraordinary people's movement for democracy in the Americas - continuing against the huge wealth and often fierce repression of the oligarchic-military regime.

Since before the June 28th coup, the regime has had close to 100% control over the main-stream meda - TV, radio, written.  The people's movement - spearheaded by the National Front Against the Coup - is using a wide range of alternative means of communication ... to gets it message out.

("Father Tamayo is not leaving." "Father Tamayo is Catracho", a friendly way of saying Honduran)
Another issue that is very contentiious and becoming violent are the looming November 29 presidential elections.  The pro-democracy movement is uniform in its condemnation of the absurd idea of a military regime carrying out 'free and fair' elections in a country that has miltiarized. There is growing resistance to the very idea or possibility of holding elections.

Everyday, the marches walk through different neighborhoods of Tegucigalpa, and cities and towns around the country.  Everywhere, people are taking ownership of the National Front Against the Coup - and coming out to join the marches, or cheer them on ...
