“ARE CANADIAN MINING COMPANIES GIVING US A BAD REPUTATION ABROAD?”
Tonight, Saturday April 17, at 7pm on CTV, “W5” – Canada’s premiere investigative series (similar to “60 minutes”) - looks at the issue:
“Paradise Lost: Are Canadian mining companies giving us a bad reputation abroad?”
This W5 special will focus particular attention on two serious mining struggles in Guatemala:
- Goldcorp Inc’s open-pit, cyanide leaching gold mine in Mayan Mam communities in western Guatemala;
- Nickel mining (first by INCO, then Skye Resources, now HudBay Minerals) in Mayan Qeqchi communities of eastern Guatemala.
For years, Rights Action and other groups – Breaking the Silence, NISGUA, etc, - have been investigating and reporting on multiple health and environmental harms and human rights violations caused by these mining operations.
If you miss the broadcast, it will be on the website for later viewing: www.ctv.ca
